World Wetlands Day

2 February each year is World Wetlands Day, marking the date of the adoption of the Convention on Wetlands on 2 February 1971 in the Iranian city of Ramsar.  To learn more click here.

World Wetlands Day Tour 

Following the success of last year’s coach trip celebrating World Wetlands Day, we are running another all-day coach trip this year on Sunday 1 February.

This year we will explore the lower Ōpāwaho / Heathcote River, exemplar projects in the CBD, Travis Wetland (BBQ Lunch), Mahinga Kai Exemplar at Anzac Drive Reserve and end with afternoon tea at Charlesworth Reserve.  There will interesting talks by a range of speakers throughout the tour.

This event is jointly organised by Avon-Ōtākaro Network, Travis Wetland Trust, Avon-Heathcote Estuary Ihutai Trust, CCC Park Ranger Service, Greening the Red Zone, Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu and DOC.

You can come along for the whole day and travel via coach (about 12km will be walked over the course of the day) or join us for part of the day on one of the walks. Bring your own morning tea - a BBQ lunch and afternoon tea will be provided.


9:30am Coach departs from Charlesworth Reserve carpark, Charlesworth Street

9:40am Coach arrives SW corner of Settlers Crescent: Heathcote Towpath walk (3km).

10:40am Morning Tea Radley Park

11:00am Coach departs from Holy Smoke in Ferry Road

11:20am Arrive Barbadoes St Bridge. Tautahi Pa site then walk to Victoria Square/Commons (2km). 

12:05pmCoach to Latimer Square: Nature Play Space 

12:20pm Coach leaves for Travis Wetland 

12:30pm Travis Education Centre, Beach Road for BBQ lunch 

1:45pm Walk: Travis east walkways, cross Travis Rd, follow Corsers Stream to the Brooker Reserve Greening the Red Zone site, then Corserland St for tour of Mahinga Kai Exemplar site: 5km

3:20pm Coach leaves for Charlesworth Reserve from Corserland Street

3:30pm Afternoon Tea followed by tour of Charlesworth Reserve hosted by Avon-Heathcote Estuary Ihutai Trust. 1km walk

Cost $20 per person for the whole day

Or $5 per person if only joining us at Travis Wetland for the BBQ
